My research on my family lines goes back nearly forty years. In putting it on this web page, I am hoping to connect with other family members and share information. I plan to continue adding information and sources on these and other lines.


Maternal Lines:

Whitted
Maiden name of my mother, Catherine Eugenia Whitted. My Whitted Line goes back to Thomas Whitted Sr. in North Carolina in the 1750s. His grandson, Jonathan, moved his family to Indiana in the 1830s; his son, Elbridge, moved to Florida in the 1880s.


Brent
Maiden name of my grandmother, Frances Louise Brent. Our line of Brents descends from George Brent, ca.1640-1699, son of George Brent and Marianna Peyton. He immigrated from England about 1670, settling in Virginia. His home was called Woodstock and was located in Stafford County, Virginia. His great great great grandson, Thomas William Brent, 1808-1875, left Washington D.C. for Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida, where many of his descendants live today.


Phillips
Maiden name of my great grandmother, Julia Jeanettie Phillips. My Phillips line descends from George W. Phillips, 1804-1888, who came to Illinois about 1839-1840, possibly from Rhode Island, New York, or Massachusetts, and who died in Arkansas. His son, Zephaniah Phillips, 1837-1903, was born in Canada, grew up in Illinois, fought in the Civil War, married Jarvis Pierce's daughter, Mary E. Pierce, and homesteaded in Florida in the 1880s. Their daughter, Julia, married Thomas Austin Whitted and lived in St. Petersburg, Florida.


Shuttleworth
Maiden name of my great grandmother, Mary Ella Shuttleworth. My Shuttleworth line descends from Colonel William Louis Shuttleworth, U.S. Marine Corps, from New Jersey and Brooklyn. He married Clotilda Brosnaham in 1843 in Pensacola, Florida; after she died he married her half-sister, Amanda Brosnaham in 1851. Her daughter Mary Ella Shuttleworth married Francis Celestino Brent of Pensacola.


Aldridge
Maiden name of my great great grandmother, Caroline E. Aldridge. My Aldridge line descends from Francis Aldridge who lived in Wilkes County, North Carolina, in the 1700s. Elijah Aldridge moved his family to Indiana in the mid 1800s, later settling with his wife, Jane, near Watsonville, California. Their daughter, Caroline, married Elbridge Whitted in Indiana. They later moved to Manatee County, Florida.


Pierce
Maiden name of my great great Grandmother, Mary E. Pierce. My Pierce line descends from John Pers who emigrated from England to Massachusetts in 1637. His descendant, Jarvis Pierce Sr., moved his family from Massachusetts to Illinois in the early 1800s. His son, Jarvis Pierce Jr. lived in Jefferson, Gallatin, and Saline Counties in Illinois. He died in 1880.


Gonzalez
Maiden name of my great great grandmother, Merced Gonzalez. My Gonzalez line descends from don Manuel Gonzalez, born in Spain, who came to Pensacola and New Orleans with the Spanish Army in the 1780s. After leaving the army, Manuel settled in Pensacola, Florida, and married Marie Louise Bonifay. Their granddaughter, Merced Gonzalez, married Thomas William Brent.


Brosnaham
Maiden name of my great great grandmother, Amanda Brosnaham. My Brosnaham line descends from Andrew Brosnahan/Brosnaham, who supposedly came from Ireland and was in New York by 1787. He settled in Catskill, New York, with his wife, Margaret Rim, and two children, George and John. John, who became a doctor, eventually settled in Pensacola, Florida, where he left many descendants.


Graupera
Maiden name of my third great grandmother, Pauline Graupera. My Graupera line descends from Mariano Graupera and Margarita Galup of Calella, a small town near Barcelona, Spain. Their son, Pablo, went to New Orleans in the late 1700s where he married Marguerite Jardelat. Their daughter Pauline married Celestino Gonzalez of Pensacola and their daughter Merced married Thomas William Brent.


Hubbard
Maiden name of my third great grandmother, Elewisa Hubbard, born in Kentucky, lived in Illinois and died in Missouri. Elewisa was married to William Jefferson Gatewood and then to Jarvis Pierce Jr. Her daughter Mary married Zephaniah Phillips and their daughter Julia married Thomas Austin Whitted, parents of my grandfather James Albert Whitted. Elewisa's Gatewood children were Mary Pierce Phillips half-siblings.


Johnson
Maiden name of my third great grandmother, Catharine Walker Johnson, daughter of Thomas Johnson, Jr. Born in Maryland to a well-established family, she moved to the District of Columbia when her father began working for the new United States government. She married William Brent, clerk of the circuit courts in Washington D.C., and had six children before she died young, in 1822. Her oldest son, Thomas William Brent, who moved to Pensacola, Florida, married and had thirteen children, one of which was my grandmother.


Sierra
Maiden name of my third great grandmother, Isabella Eugenia Sierra. My Sierra line descends from Dr. Eugenio Antonio Sierra and his wife, Francesca Dauphin. Dr. Sierra was born in Spain in 1760 and came to Pensacola in 1785. His daughter Isabella married Dr. John Brosnaham.


Darby
Maiden name of my fourth great grandmother, Rhoda Darby, whose great great grandfather, John Darby, was the first of our Darby ancestors in America. John was a fisherman and when his fishing boat was captured by a pirate, he joined the pirates and was eventually killed by the authorities in 1689. His descendants lived much more normal and respectable lives, his son, John, marrying Deborah Conant, descendant of Roger Conant who founded the town of Salem, Massachusetts. Rhoda married Jarvis Peirce Sr., her fourth cousin – both descendents of our first Pierce ancestor in America, John Pers – and moved to Illinois about 1818.


Jardelat
Maiden name of my fourth great grandmother, Marguerite Jardelat. My Jardelat line descends from Alain Jardelat, born in France, who came to New Orleans in the 1700s. His son, Pierre, and family lived at Arkansas Post. Pierre's daughter Marguerite married Pablo Granpera; their daughter Pauline married Celestino Gonzalez of Pensacola.


Bonifay
Maiden name of my fourth great grandmother, Marie Louise Bonifay. My Bonifay line descends from Joseph Bonifay and his wife, Mariana Pingron, who was born in France. They married in Santo Domingo in the 1770s and were in Pensacola, Florida in the 1780s. Their daughter Marie Louise Bonifay married Manuel Gonzalez of Spain and Pensacola.


Dauphin
Maiden name of my fourth great grandmother, Francesca Dauphin. My Dauphin line descends from Francisco Dauphin, born in France, and his wife, Ysabel Pichol, who was born in the Canary Islands. They lived in Pensacola, Florida, in the later 1700s. Their daughter Francesca married Dr. Eugenio Sierra.


Carroll
Maiden name of my fifth great grandmother, Eleanor Darnall. Eleanor Darnall, ca. 1703-1796, was the daughter of Henry Darnall II and Anne Digges of Prince George's County, Maryland. She married Daniel Carroll, an immigrant from Ireland and the son of Keane Carroll. Their seven children were born in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and included the first Catholic Archbishop, John Carroll, and a signer of the Constitution, Daniel Carroll II. Their daughter, Ann Carroll, 1733-1804, married Robert Brent, of Stafford County, Virginia, and my line descends from them.


Trimingham Maiden name of my fifth great grandmother, Catherine Trimingham, who married George Brent in Bermuda about 1730. The Trimingham family goes back to the 1600s in Bermuda where Catherine's father served as President and her great grandfather as governor of Bermuda. Catherine's mother-in-law, Susannah Seymour, was also from Bermuda.

Gale
Maiden name of my fifth great grandmother, Sarah Gale. The Gale family came from England in the 1600s to Watertown, Massachusetts. Richard and Mary Gale were the first of the family in Massachusetts. Richard's son, Abraham Gale and his wife, Sarah Fiske, were the parents of John Gale and the grandparents of Sarah Gale who married Josiah Peirce of Worcester, Massachusetts. Their son Jarvis Peirce Sr. moved with his wife, Rhoda Darby, and children to Illinois before 1820.

Comee
Maiden name of my sixth great grandmother, Abigail Comee, granddaughter of a Scottish prisoner of war, David Comee who arrived in Massachusetts on the same ship as William Munroe, another ancestor. David eventually married, settled in Concord and had six children before being killed during the fight in Sudbury in 1676 during King Philip’s War. Abigail’s granddaughter was Rhoda Darby, my fourth great grandmother, who married Jarvis Peirce Senior and moved to Illinois.

Seymour
Maiden name of my sixth great grandmother, Susannah Seymour. The Seymour family, originally from England, were some of the first settlers on the island. Daughter of Daniel and great grandaughter of Florentius Seymour who served as governor twice, Susannah married Robert Brent of Virginia and went there to live at the Brent plantantion, Woodstock, in Stafford County. Their son George also married a Bermuda girl.

Conant
Maiden name of my seventh great grandmother, Deborah Conant, great granddaughter of Roger Conant, our first Conant ancestor in America, who founded the town of Salem, Massachusetts, in 1626. Deborah married John Darby and their great granddaughter, Rhoda Darby, married her fourth cousin, Jarvis Peirce, both descendants of John Pers, our first Pierce ancestor in America. Rhoda and Jarvis moved with their family to Illinois about 1818.

Munroe
Maiden name of my seventh great grandmother, Martha Munroe, daughter of William Munroe who arrived in Massachusetts in 1652 as a Scottish prisoner of war, captured by Cromwell's forces during the English Civil War. He eventually settled in Lexington, Massachusetts, married three times and lived a long life. Martha married John Comee and their granddaughter, Rhoda Darby, who married Jarvis Peirce Sr., is my fourth great grandmother.




Paternal Lines:

Healy
My maiden name. My Healy line goes back to Thomas Healy and Mary O'Boyle in County Mayo, Ireland, in the 1800s. All but one of their children emigrated to the United States. My great grandfather, Patrick Healy, moved with his family to Minnesota in 1866. One of their children, James Henry Healy, my grandfather, started the Healy Plumbing and Heating Corporation with his brother in 1902. They installed plumbing in railroad depots, hospitals, schools, hotels, and forts, including Fort Knox. A book on the Healy and Hope families was published in 2002 by my aunt, Hope Healy Koontz, and myself.


Miller
Maiden name of my grandmother, Lucy Gertrude Miller. My Miller line goes back to John and Margaret Miller in Westmoreland County, England, in the 1700s. This family of merchants included William, a silk merchant, his son, Joseph Dundas, a ship broker who lived in England and Brazil and who died in Madeira. Descendants moved to Canada, the United States, Brazil, India and South Africa. My great grandfather, Charles Edward Miller, homesteaded in Manitoba, Canada, and later lived in Pennsylvania, England, Wyoming, and Montana.


Hope
Maiden name of my great grandmother, Mary Hope. My Hope line descends from Thomas Hope and his wife, Mary Barrett, in County Mayo, Ireland. Thomas Hope served for 20 years in the British Army, mostly in South Africa and Ceylon. His daughter, Mary, married Patrick Healy.


Bayley
Maiden name of my great grandmother, Annie M. Bayley. My Bayley line goes back to Thomas and Elizabeth Hassall Bayley in Shropshire, England. Their great great granddaughter, Annie Bayley, married Charles Edward Miller. Annie and Charlie homesteaded in Manitoba, Canada, in the 1880s and are buried in Denver, Colorado. This line also goes back to the Ashcroft family of England. Annie Bayley's mother was Esther Ashcroft and her grandfather was Joshua Ashcroft.


Ashcroft
Maiden name of my great great grandmother, Esther Ashcroft. The Ashcroft family has it’s roots in the English counties of Lancashire, Cheshire and Staffordshire. The family goes back to Samuel and Mary Ashcroft, who lived in the Manchester area, a family of slaters, or roofers. One of their children, Joshua, who fell from a roof and died when young, was the grandfather of Esther Ashcroft, whose family settled in the Wolverhampton area, and who married Hamlet Bayley, father of Annie M. Bayley.

Spurstow
Maiden name of my great great great great grandmother, Mary Spurstow. Mary Spurstow married William Miller in 1779, bringing the Spurstow line into our family. The Spurstows lived for many years in Cheshire, England, going back to the 1200s to the Sheriff of Cheshire named William de Spurstowe. Mary's sister, Dorothy, married a Tomlinson, from another Cheshire family, and their daughter, Elizabeth, married Mary's son, Joseph Dundas Miller, her first cousin.

Tomlinson
Maiden name of my great great great grandmother, Elizabeth Tomlinson, daughter of Dr. John Tomlinson and Dorothy Spurstow of Cheshire. Elizabeth married her first cousin, Joseph Dundas Miller of Liverpool. The Tomlinson family goes back several generations in Cheshire, England. Dr. John Tomlinson's father was Randle Tomlinson.

Illidge
Maiden name of my sixth great grandmother, Elizabeth Illidge, daughter of George Illidge of Cheshire. Elizabeth married John Spurstow of Chester, Cheshire. Elizabeth's grandfather, Richard Illidge, was a prolific writer, mostly on the value of living a moral and virtuous life, but also about his own life, leaving us a valuable picture of his life and family.
