Josephine Whitted was the fourth child of Enoch and Eliza Hise Whitted of Clinton, Vermillion County, Indiana. She was born in Clinton and lived her whole life there. In 1880 she married James G. Clark, a farmer, also born in Indiana.

Josephine died, following a stroke, on 11 July 1929, and was buried in the Whitted/Clark family plot at Riverside Cemetery. James G. Clark, the son of James and Serena Clark, died the following year, in 1830. He was also buried in the family plot at Riverside Cemetery.

The couple had two sons, Charles W. Clark and Ernest E. Clark who survived their parents.
