William Whitted, 1857-1945

William was the third child of Enoch Whitted and Elizabeth "Eliza" Hise of Vermillion County, Indiana. Some researchers have not listed him as one of their children. Others have said he died when young. He is listed on censuses when young as William E. Whitted but his gravestones says William W. Whitted. One researcher gives his middle name as Enoch and another as Washburn. I have not found his middle name used in any document, but he was a child of Enoch and Eliza and he did not die young.

William appeared in the 1860 census with his parents in Clinton Township, Vermillion County, Indiana, as William E. Whithead, age 3, born in Indiana. He had two brothers, George and John F., and one sister, Josephine. In 1870 he is listed as William E. Whithead, age 12, born Indiana, the family still in Clinton Township. In 1880 he was still living at home, William Whitted, single, age 22, a laborer.

At the end of that year, on 16 December 1880, William married Cora Bess Hunt in Vermillion County, Indiana. They had four children before she died from consumption, in 1897, when she was 33. She was in Marshall, Calhoun County, Michigan, when she died, living with relatives. Where William and the children were living at the time is not known. She was buried in Clinton at the Riverside Cemetery.

William and his children have not been found in the 1900 census but by 1910, William E. Whitted, widowed, age 52, was living in Clinton with his mother and his sister Cora G. Whitted. When his mother died in 1916, he is listed as one of her surviving children, all of whom were living in the vicinity. In 1920 William Whitted, a widower, age 63, was boarding in the household of Julia Watson in Vermillion County. Sometime after 1920 he moved to Washington County, Louisiana, and by 1930 was living with his son, Reuben H. Whitted and his wife Ada. He was 74 and widowed. He was still living with Reuben and Ada in 1940, now in Prichard, Mobile, Alabama, age 86. He died in a hospital in Mobile on 17 August 1945, age 92.

His death was recorded in Mobile, Alabama, 17 Aug 1945, age 92, with his parents listed as Ennoch Whitted and Lizza Hice and his spouse as Cora Hunt. On his gravestone he is listed as William W. Whitted, not William E. Whitted.

Reuben Horace was William and Cora's oldest child, born in 1882, followed by Clara G., born 1885, and Agnes Loraine, about 1890. The youngest child was a son, Enoch. Clara married Claude S. Stout in 1908 in Michigan, and Agnes Loraine married John L. Criswell sometime before 1908 when a son Elmont was born. Agnes died in 1912 in St. Louis, Missouri, and was buried in Clinton. Nothing is known of Enoch, the son, except his mention in his sister’s obituary in 1912. Ada, Reuben’s wife, died about a year after William and Reuben died in 1965. William, Reuben and Ada are all buried in Pine Crest Cemetery in Mobile, Alabama.
