Zephaniah Phillips Enrolled in Company B, Illinois Cavalry Volunteers, Regiment 1, as a bugler, in June 1861. After being taken prisoner on September 20, 1861, in the Battle of Lexington, Missouri, he was discharged. He next enrolled in Company F, 56th Illinois Infantry Volunteers, as a private.He was absent or sick most of the time and was finally dropped from the rolls for desertion in September 1862. The following month he married Mary E. Pierce in Harrisburg, Illinois, and then joined Company F, 120th Illinois Volunteers as a 2d Lieutenant. Three months later, in January 1863, he resigned from that regiment. In September 1864 he enlisted as Navy seaman and served on the USS Springfield and then on the USS Great Western. A year later he was discharged from the Navy.
