William Rearden, 1793-1846
Tombstones
Grayville Cemetery

Original gravestone

New gravestone

William Rearden’s first tombstone, left, was vandalized and the Daughters of the War of 1812 put up a new tombstone. William is buried in the Grayville Cemetery in Grayville, White County, Illinois. Grayville is right on the border with Indiana, just across the river, and just north of Highway 64.

William was born in Woodford County on 3 February 1793. He served, along with others from Woodford County, in the War of 1812. He was in Capt. Virgil McCracken’s Company, First Rifle Regiment, Kentucky Militia.

He died, probably in Grayville, on 1 December 1846, and was buried in the Grayville Cemetery. His wife Elmira survived him by many years but is not buried with him.

The tombstone photos belong to Kathy Richardson, a Rearden descendant who was kind enough to send scans. They are copies of originals from another Rearden descendant. The author has not been able to find a Grayville Cemetery on a map nor online, so is not sure in which cemetery the tombstone is located.
