William Clark Whitted was born 25 January 1838 in Rockville, Parke County, Indiana, the eighth child of Jonathan Whitted and Nancy Rogers Clark. His family moved from North Carolina to Indiana not long before he was born.
Sometime before he married, he moved to Boone County, Iowa, where his older brother, Elbridge Whitted, lived and where his mother died in 1857. On 26 July 1856 he married Sarah Ann Richardson, the daughter of John Joseph Richardson and Mary Polly Bauguss. Sarah Ann was born in North Carolina on 5 February 1837.
William and Sarah had eight children, all born in Iowa. They were in Fairfax, Osage County, Kansas, in 1880, but back in Boone County, Iowa, five years later.
Sometime in the mid 1890s William and Sarah moved to Latah County, Idaho, where three of their sons had moved. William died there on 16 January 1897 and Sarah died there ten years later on 14 March 1907. Both are buried in the Genesee City Cemetery in Genesee, Latah County, Idaho, about one hundred miles south of Coeur d’Alene and not far from the border with Washington State. Their impressive tombstone can be seen on the Find A Grave website.
