Julia Phillips Whitted: Obituary

Julia Phillips Whitted, 1870-1949

Julia Jeanettie Phillips Whitted was the daughter of Zephaniah Phillips and Mary E. Pierce, daughter of Jarvis Pierce and Elewisa Hubbard. Although her obituary and death certificate say that she was born in Paducah, Kentucky, her census records indicate that she was born in Illinois. The family was in Dixon, Lee County, Illinois, in 1870 just before she was born. Her daughter-in-law, Beatrice Pepperdine Whitted, wrote that Julia told her she was born in Dixon, Illinois.

Julia's family moved to Florida in the early 1880s; her father homesteaded on Long Key in what is now Pass-a-Grille, Florida. She married Thomas Whitted in 1887, the first couple to be married in Pass-a-Grille. They settled in St. Petersburg where their eight children were born. Julia was very active in the real estate business in St. Petersburg.

Julia died 30 November 1949, three years after her husband. They are both buried in Greenwood Cemetery in St. Petersburg, where many of their descendants still live.
