Edward Howard Miller, 24, born Canada, bachelor, and Annie Mary Hazelhurst, 15, born Natal, spinster, were married in the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Barberton, South Africa, on 4 June 1909, by banns and with the consent of Annie's parents as she was only fifteen.

Edward was the son of Charles Edward Miller and Annie Bayley. He was born in Manitoba, Canada, fought in the Boer War in Africa and remained there. Annie Mary Hazelhurst was the daughter of Edward Hazelhurst and Georgina Muller. Edward and Annie had eight children, all born in South Africa: Constance Beryl, Edward Howard Jr, Reginald Ernest, Frederick Charles, Nina Annie, Gwendolyn Ethel, Robert Douglas, Richard Neville and Joice Helen.
