Maude Alice Miller, 1861-1958, was born in Liverpool, England, 10 May 1861, the daughter of William Charles Miller, a shipbroker, and Lucy Swainson. She married Edmund Ernest Bentall, the son of Edward Hammond Bentall whose father started and agricultural machinery company that later became the E.H. Bentall Company. She grew up in Liverpool but moved to Heybridge, Essex, after her marriage, living there until her death.
