Henry Miller was born in Liverpool, England, 18 September 1859, to William Charles Miller, a shipbroker, and Lucy Swainson, the fourth of their nine children. He graduated from Uppingham School in Rutland County.
Henry "Harry" Miller was trained as an engineer but went to Assam, India, to the tea plantations. He became head of the Jorehaut Tea Company in Assam and was quite eminent. He became a Companion of the Indian Empire which was an honor granted to those who distinguished themselved in India. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly in Assam and President of the Assam Bengal Tea Association. Henry's younger brother, George Ernest, was one of his tea plantation managers in India.
On November 3d, 1892, in Kensington, England, Henry married Frances Margaret "Maggie" Adams, 1864-1937, the oldest child of James Scovell Adams. Harry and Maggie had four children: Margaret Newton, Henry Francis Swainson, Mary Dorothy and Charles Scovell.
