Dr. Edwin Swainson Miller was born in Liverpool February 7, 1869, the son of William Charles Miller, a shipbroker, and Lucy Swainson. He was educated at Shrewsbury School in Shropshire, received his degree of Bachelor of Medicine at University College, Liverpool Medical School and a Bachelor of Surgery at Victoria University in British Columbia. In 1895 he entered the Royal Navy as a surgeon. He retired from the Royal Navy in 1920 with the rank of surgeon captain. Following his retirement, he practiced medicine in Brentwood, Essex, England for nearly twenty-five years.

He married Helen Beatrice Liardet in 1913 and they had two sons, Richard Anthony Swainson and Peter John Miller, also a physician. He died December 30, 1945, in Brentwood, Essex County, England. His wife, Helen, died twenty years later, in 1965.
