Zephaniah Phillips and Mary E. Pierce were married 2 October 1862 in Harrisburg, Saline County, Illinois. Mary's surname is given as Price instead of Pierce. Mary was the daughter and only child of Jarvis Pierce Jr., 1800-1880, and Elewisa A.R. Hubbard. The Certificate of Record of Marriage was recorded 5 May 1904 in Harrisburg by W.S. Dorris, Clerk of the Court. This might have been done when Mary was applying to the U.S. Government for a widow's pension after Zephaniah died in 1903.
