The photograph above was taken at the dedication of the Albert Whitted Airport in St. Petersburg, Florida, in the late 1920s. The airport was named in honor of James Albert Whitted, a well-known and popular aviator in St. Petersburg and son of Thomas Austin Whitted and Julia Jeanettie Phillips of St. Petersburg. Albert Whitted died in an airplane crash on 19 August 1923 near what is now Ft. Walton Beach, east of Pensacola. The airport is nationally recognized as the birthplace of scheduled airline flight.
