Record of Marriage for John Bayley & Jane Smith
1 February 1812, Gnosall, Staffordshire, England

A record of the marriage of John Bayley and Jane Smith is recorded in the parish registers of St. Lawrence Church in Gnosall. Jane was born in the village of Wilbrighton, near Gnosall, and was probably living there when she got married. Her parents, Thomas and Mary Smith had six other children. Jane was their second oldest. John Bayley was living in the parish of Clerkenwell in London at the time of the marriage although he had been born in Newport, not far from Gnosall. Both were twenty-one years of age or older and it appears that both might have signed their names to the document as the handwriting is different from what is written above. The two witnesses were Harriet Smith and Thomas Smith. Thomas Smith was either her father or younger brother. Harriet Smith is unidentified. John was a schoolmaster or teacher. John and Jane were the parents of at least five children and my line descends through the oldest child, John Horatio Robert Bayley.
